During a wintry week in Maine, a popular York County summer destination has been named on Tripadvisor's list of the top 10 U.S. beaches in 2023.

The list, published Tuesday, puts Ogunquit Beach at No. 9, sandwiched between two California seaside destinations, Coronado (No. 8) and La Jolla (No. 10). Top U.S. billing goes to Ka'anapall Beach in Maui, Hawaii.

Tripadvisor, the world's largest travel guidance platform, announced world and U.S. rankings as part of its annual Travelers' Choice Awards. Ogunquit is back on the U.S. list after a two-year absence; the York County town was ranked No. 7 in 2021 but missing from the top 10 lineup in 2022.

"This beach is impeccably clean, and has a smooth, sandy floor," a Tripadvisor user posted about Ogunquit. "At low tide the beach is probably the widest beach ever. At high tide you can walk out hundreds of feet and still be only waist high.” Tripadvisor's blurb lists 35 notes, 21 bed-and-breakfasts and inns and 217 vacation rentals to choose from in the town, whose Ogunquit Playhouse is also a big tourist draw.

Three of Tripadvisor's top 10 U.S. beaches are in Hawaii, while Ogunquit is the only locale in the northeastern United States.

Brazilian island getaway

For the latest rankings, researchers analyzed tens of millions of reviews submitted by millions of global travelers over the past 12 months to assign rankings based on the quality and quantity of ratings for beach experiences.

The global list was topped by Baio de Sancho on the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha, moving up six places from last year.

"As a huge beach fan myself, I know the impossible-to-resist allure of sunshine and turquoise water — and certainly, there's plenty of that on this year's list," said Sarah Firshein, head of editorial at Tripadvisor, "But there are some delightful surprises as well.

"In addition to the much-loved beaches of Hawaii, the Caribbean, and mainland Europe, she noted, "our community is really looking to kick up their experiences by embracing the cliffs of Cannon Beach, on the coast of Oregon in the Western United States, and cooler destinations like Reynisfjara Beach in Iceland. So whether you're looking to pack a windbreaker or a swimsuit, our list has something for a wide range of travelers—and it might even convince the most ardent beach skeptics to embrace some time on the sand."
