Orono firm wins defense contract

Maine Secure Composites LLC in Orono has received a contract worth nearly $13 million from the United States Department of Defense.

The contract, announced yesterday, will allow Maine Secure Composites to continue developing tamper-resistant containers for the international shipping industry, Cynthia Smith, the company's manager, told Mainebiz this morning. The company received its first federal contract for the container project in 2005.

Smith and her husband, Fred, are developing the product with Dr. Habib Dagher, director of the University of Maine's Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center. They currently employ eight people, but with the new contract, they may need to hire another eight soon and open a laboratory in Bangor in the next few weeks, Smith said.
