OSHA cites Biddeford Hostess facility

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited Interstate Brands, doing business as Hostess Brands, for workplace safety issues at its Biddeford production plant.

The company faces more than $100,000 in fines for eight serious and two repeat alleged violations of workplace safety standards following a safety inspection by OSHA’s Augusta area office, according to a press release. The Biddeford plant manufactures Hostess products. William Coffin, OSHA’s area director for Maine, said the inspection revealed “mechanical, electrical, fall and exit hazards”; violations included an absence of guardrails, blocked emergency exits, unguarded moving parts on machinery and employees performing work on live electrical equipment without proper safety training. OSHA cited International Brands in 2010 for similar hazards at plants in Columbus, Ga., and Schiller Park, Ill.

Interstate Brands has 15 business days from receipt of its citations and proposed penalties to either comply, meet with OSHA’s area director or contest the findings to the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
