Ousted BIW union leaders to sue

The four ousted leaders of Bath Iron Work's largest union are planning to sue their parent organization for defaming them.

The Local S6 elected officials plan to file a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Portland against the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers charging that the allegations that led to their suspension are "absurd" and defamed them, their lawyer, Leon Rosenblatt of West Hartford, Conn., told The Times Record in Brunswick. Rosenblatt also said IAMAW's investigation is a retaliation against the officers' reluctance to use local member dues to fund the international union's political action organization. The four officials are President Mike Keenan, Vice President Troy Osgood, Chief Bath Steward Mike Cyr and Trustee Cathy London.

The lawsuit calls for Keenan, Osgood and Cyr to be placed on the committee negotiating a new union contract with the shipyard, for IAMAW's control of the union hall to be lifted and financial compensation, according to the paper.

Keenan and the others have been suspended since March, when IAMAW launched an investigation into allegations that included financial mismanagement.
