The PCHC Foundation has been created to advance the charitable mission of Maine’s largest community health center, by supporting the infrastructure and workforce to advance high-quality primary healthcare in the Bangor region.

“I am thrilled to be assuming the helm of the PCHC Foundation at this early startup stage and to shine a spotlight on the vital importance of primary care in improving health outcomes, reducing healthcare costs, and supporting economic development in our state,” Williams said.

Williams is a member of the PCHC board of directors and most recently served as executive director of the Collins Center for the Arts at the University of Maine in Orono. He is also a graduate of the university system.

Williams has represented District 122 in the Maine Legislature and has volunteered with numerous nonprofit and civic organizations, including Girl Scouts of Maine and Bangor Rotary.

“I have spent my entire career working to strengthen our community, which makes the opportunity to directly address our community’s health especially meaningful,” Williams said.

The nonprofit said it relies on philanthropy, grants and partnerships to subsidize the “insufficient patient service revenue it receives,” in order to expand access, enhance services and innovate for the benefit of patients.

The foundation will work to advance the charitable mission of PCHC by supporting infrastructure and programming, including creating new health centers, expanding social support services and on-the-job training programs, addressing primary care workforce recruitment and retention and advancing innovation.

“Primary care is absent from or secondary to most public conversations about healthcare these days, yet it is the foundation of a strong health care system,” said Lori Dwyer, president and CEO.

Penobscot Community Health Center has 700 employees and a payroll of $68 million. It serves more than 53,000 patients with medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy and other specialty outpatient services, through 16 practices and program service sites in the Bangor area, and in Belfast and Jackman.
