Penobscot Community Health Care has hired Kendra Emery, a licensed doctor of osteopathy, as its next chief medical officer. She will start her new role in March.
Emery succeeds Crystal Landry, who stepped down from the organization in 2024 following nine years in the role, including five as CEO. Landry, a registered nurse, was honored as a Mainebiz Woman to Watch in 2021.
The appointment follows a year-long national search.
“Dr. Emery has demonstrated a strong commitment to our mission and has an astute understanding of PCHC and its unique role in the Maine health care landscape,” said Lori Dwyer, president and CEO.
Emery comes to PCHC after several executive roles at MaineHealth, most recently as the chief medical officer of the MaineHealth Accountable Care Organization.
Before that, she served in executive roles at Pen Bay and Waldo County General hospitals and as medical director of the Rockland primary care practice. She also oversaw service lines, including occupational health and walk-in care.
Emery also led MaineHealth Pen Bay Hospital’s outpatient COVID-19 response.
In 2013, she worked as a physician in areas including Farmington, Rockland and Franklin County.
The Wayne native earned her undergraduate degree at Bowdoin College and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.
In 2023, she completed a certificate in health care leadership from Yale University and is in the process of earning a certification in AI in health care from Harvard in 2026.
“PCHC has long been a leader in innovative, community-based care, and I look forward to partnering with the team to advance high-quality, equitable and forward-thinking solutions for the patients and families we serve," Energy said.
Penobscot Community Health Center has 700 employees and a payroll of $68 million. It serves more than 53,000 patients with medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy and other specialty outpatient services, through 16 practices and program service sites in the Bangor area, and in Belfast and Jackman.
