Portland faces cuts

The city of Portland today is planning to announce a major reorganization of city departments and a number of layoffs, including City Transportation Director Jeff Monroe, news station WCSH 6 reported.

City Manager Joseph Gray Jr. is expected to present his budget proposal to the city council tonight, which includes an unspecified number of layoffs to offset a projected decrease of $3.5 million in revenue and an additional $3 million cost increase for the 2008-2009 municipal budget, the Portland Press Herald reported.

If the city council approves Gray's budget proposal, the layoffs would affect all departments and levels, the Press Herald reported. Ed Suslovic, Portland's mayor, told WSCH 6 that the entire transportation department would be affected, and director Monroe would be among those laid off.
