Portland Harbor dredging begins

The Army Corps of Engineers will begin work this week to remove up to 500,000 cubic yards of sediment from Portland Harbor — the first maintenance dredging in 15 years — to assure depths of 35 feet at mean low tide.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the dredging will allow ships to sit lower in the water and, therefore, carry more cargo. The paper reported the project was initially scheduled for Nov. 1 but was delayed because of cold weather conditions the contractor encountered at other projects in New Haven and Norwalk, Conn.

The paper reported that the vessels from contractor Cashman Dredging are expected to arrive in Portland as early as Tuesday, including the company’s dredge the Dale Pyatt, which according to The Boston Globe, is believed to be the largest dredge of its kind in the nation.
