As Portland International Jetport looks to accommodate additional passengers — including aging travelers — it has completed a $21.6 million project to expand and enhance its concourse.
The upgrades were unveiled this week.
“This project was really focused on meeting the needs of our passengers,” Paul Bradbury, the airport’s director, said during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday.
The project added three passenger boarding bridges, seven ADA accessible all-gender toilets, a service animal relief area, an adult changing station and ground power and pre-conditioned air units. The concourse was expanded by 4,200 square feet.
“Maine is the oldest state in the nation when you look at average age and this facility will help meet the needs of an aging traveler with ADA accessible toilets, an adult changing station, service animal relief area and the ability to use a passenger boarding bridge to board your flight instead of walking outside and using exterior boarding ramps,” said Bradbury.
Funding came from the Federal Aviation Administration, state of Maine and the jetport.
The project was completed by South Portland-based Optimum Construction and Turner Construction Co., which is based in New York City and has a Portland office. Engineering firms involved were Aero Engineering, Gensler and Stantec.
“It really took a team effort to bring this project to completion and we thank all of our partners and Jetport staff for their incredible work” said Bradbury.
