Portland OKs ‘pop-up park’ for Press Hotel

The Press Hotel in Portland has been given approval to open an adjacent “pop-up park” that will restrict vehicle traffic on a 100-foot-long section of Federal Street between July and October.

The Forecaster reported that the Portland City Council on Monday approved the proposal made by the hotel, which is set to open in the former Portland Press Herald building sometime this month. The park will host about eight to 10 events a year, and it will include carpeting and seating. It might also include “canopy lighting.”

The park plan is being opposed by some nearby business owners, who said they don’t like the idea of closing off a street because it will restrict traffic movement for customers.

The city’s public services director, Michael Bobinsky, said he doesn’t think traffic will be a problem — though no official traffic study has been conducted. However, city officials are expected to closely examine the park’s impact on traffic.
