Portland podiatrist pleads guilty to drug charges

A Portland podiatrist could face more than 10 years in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday to providing phony prescriptions for oxycodone to drug traffickers in exchange for cocaine and cash.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Dr. John. B. Perry pleaded guilty to nine of the 45 counts leveled against him in February of this year.

Perry, under investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration since 2010, pleaded guilty to charges that included conspiracy to distribute drugs, health care fraud and illegal distribution of oxycodone.

In exchange for the plea, the paper reported, prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney's Office are recommending a sentence of 121 months in prison and a dismissal of the other 36 charges against him.

Perry faced a maximum of 20 years in prison and a fine of $1 million for each of eight counts and a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 for another count of Medicare and MaineCare fraud, the paper reported.

Perry will remain in prison until his sentencing, expected in the coming months, the paper reported.
