Portland police are investigating two bank robberies this week that occurred within three miles of each other.
The first occurred at 9:32 a.m. on Saturday, when police responded to a robbery at Bangor Savings Bank at 1071 Brighton Ave.
The suspect entered the bank and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing into the wooded area behind the building. No weapon was observed during the robbery.
Police said the suspect is reported to be 5’8” tall and stocky and wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, green pants, navy blue shoes, blue gloves with a mask and sunglasses. After a search for several hours with K9 units, police were unable to locate the suspect.
On Wednesday at 11:15 a.m., police responded to a robbery at a Kennebec Savings Bank branch at 53 Baxter Blvd. The branch has been there since 2023.
As in the other robbery, no weapon was observed. The suspect entered the bank and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing toward Baxter Boulevard and the Pedro Little League Field.
Police said the suspect is a white male with brown hair, a gray hooded sweatshirt, navy blue jeans, blue latex gloves, a blue Carhartt baseball hat and light brown boots, with a blue neck gaiter and sunglasses. South Portland police provided K9 support in the search.
As of Thursday morning, Portland Police Department spokesman Brad Nadeau said there were no updates on the investigations.
In a statement emailed to Mainebiz, Bangor Savings Bank spokeswoman Jaclyn Fish said the bank closed the rest of the day Saturday after the robbery and reopened on Monday with normal business hours.
"We are grateful that all employees and customers are safe, and we appreciate the swift and professional response of the Portland Police Department," she said. "For any further inquiries regarding the incident, we respectfully refer all questions to the Portland Police Department."
In a statement posted on its website, Kennebec Savings Bank said, “The safety of our team and community is our highest priority. We are fully cooperating with authorities as they conduct an active investigation. We respectfully defer all further inquiries to local law enforcement at this time.”
Police will not comment at this time on whether the two cases are related and ask anyone with any information that may be helpful to call them at (207) 874-8575 or send a text with the keyword “PPDME” to 847411.
Bangor Savings Bank is ranked as the largest Maine-based bank in the 2025 Mainebiz Book of Lists, while Kennebec Savings is ranked No. 8. Rankings are based on assets as of June 30, 2024.
