Take me out to the … cornhole court? A baseball park may sound like a strange place for a bag toss, but not if you’re the Portland Sea Dogs raising funds for a good paws — er, cause.

The Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox will host its second annual cornhole tournament later this month to raise funds for the MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital.

Based at Maine Medical Center close to Delta Dental Park at Hadlock Field, the facility is Maine’s only full-service children’s hospital offering services from preventative to specialized care and surgical treatment. Frequently during ballgames, fans are asked to give a collective wave to any pediatric patients watching the game from the hospital.

“We are thrilled to add this community-based, family-friendly event to our ongoing support of the great work the MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital does for our community,” said Jesse Scaglion, general manager of the Sea Dogs. “The funds raised for this event will benefit the patients and families undergoing treatment at the world-class facility.”

Last year’s event raised $4,000, according to Chris Cameron, the team’s vice president for communications and fan experience.

"We have about 30 teams signed up for far, so we're off a great start," he told Mainebiz on Monday.

Real Wicked Events will be administering the event, which the team says is open to all skill levels and ages. That includes throwers with furry paws, like beloved mascot Slugger the Sea Dog.

"Slugger will be around throughout the event, providing his expertise and tomfoolery to the participants," Cameron said.

The event will feature 16 courts and is capped at 64 teams. The cost for a team of two is $100, and each team will play at least four games.
