Quarantine lingers at Scarborough pet store

A Scarborough pet store remains under state quarantine after a second puppy tested positive for a potentially life-threatening illness.

The Forecaster reported that the Little Paws pet store has been under quarantine since Feb. 1 after a Husky puppy sold at the store was diagnosed with parvovirus, which affects a dog's intestinal tract.

The discovery of a second case of a viral infection this week has extended a quarantine from the Maine Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Program.

The new case of the virus also prompted renewed calls by members of a group called Maine Citizens Against Puppy Mills to close the shop. The group has previously protested the conditions of the store and the purchase of dogs from large-scale breeders, the paper reported.
