Realtors Foundation awards $60,000 to address housing

The Maine Association of Realtors Foundation, the charitable arm of Maine Association of Realtors, awarded $60,000 to six organizations to address housing needs across Maine.

The grants, funded through a competitive grant program from the Realtor Affordable Housing Fund, are for nonprofits that help Maine’s most vulnerable households.

The following organizations each received a $10,000 grant:

• Habitat for Humanity 7 Rivers will use the funds to purchase materials needed by  volunteers completing critical home repairs, weatherization projects and accessibility modifications for homeowners in Lincoln, Sagadahoc and portions of Cumberland counties.

• Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter & Services will use the funds to assist young adults age 18 to 24 years old in Kennebec and Somerset counties who are homeless or are in danger of becoming homeless by providing supportive housing services through its Youth Empowerment Supports program.

• New Beginnings will use the funds to address housing barriers through rental assistance and housing navigation and help young people in Androscoggin and Kennebec counties facing housing instability transition from living in a shelter to stable, independent housing.

• New Hope for Women will use the funds to provide a continuum of safe haven emergency and transitional housing options to individuals at risk or experiencing homelessness due to domestic violence.

• Penquis CAP will use the funds to make critical home repairs, accessibility modifications and other health and safety repairs for Penobscot, Piscataquis and Knox county family and senior homeowners in need and whose health and safety are in imminent danger.

• Rural Community Action Ministry will use the funds to deliver home repair, accessibility modification, homeless prevention programs and money management skills education in Central and Western Maine counties.

The fund was established in 1989 and derives its revenue from interest earnings paid by financial institutions on real estate trust accounts administered by Realtor offices across Maine.

Since 1991, the foundation has awarded $1.3 million in competitive grants to address affordable housing needs.
