Rockland cafe plans to make coffee great again

Just in time for the presidential election season, a coffee shop is opening in Rockland and giving a shout-out to President Donald Trump.

Covfefe Coffee and Gifts will open at 325 Old County Road, according to a news report Monday in the Knox Village Soup.

Jestin and Carrie Merchant, of Camden, plan to open the store on property they’ve owned since 2011, according to the article. Carrie Merchant told a reporter that the store will be “pro-Trump” but refused to provide further detail.

Mainebiz was unable to confirm the report, but a photo of the site shows a sign with the new business’ name already in place. “Trump 2020” banners hang nearby.

The site of the shop is about a mile from downtown Rockland, in a two-story building that had been rented to a florist and other businesses.

“Covfefe” is a misspelling Trump made of the word "coverage" in a tweet about negative press reporting. The tweet, which Trump posted after midnight on May 31, 2017, was deleted several hours later. Nevertheless, Trump and then-White House press secretary Sean Spicer hinted that the spelling was intentional.

The word has gone on to become the subject of social media memes and comedians’ punch lines.

“Covfefe” has also inspired business. T-shirts, hats, board games and a brand of toilet paper have adopted the term. Dozens of trademark applications have been filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for covfefe-themed products. To date, none appear to have been granted.

Ironically, there’s also a Covfefe Coffee (whose ads were pulled by Amazon over the brand’s depiction of the U.S. flag) and a Texas-based Covfefe Cafe (which closed Jan. 31). Trump is well-known for his abstinence from coffee.

I'm in Arizona and I think the idea of a Trump-themed covfefe, er, um, I mean "coffee" shop is both hilarious and good business. They have already stated that they intend to serve all comers....
