Rockport residents pass on broadband engineering study
Residents of Rockport rejected spending $300,000 for an engineering study looking at high-speed internet expansion, despite the proposal having support from both the selectboard and town budget committee.
During the town’s annual meeting, a supporter of the broadband project, business owner Aaron Annis, said that the lack of high-speed internet puts Rockport at a disadvantage when trying to attract businesses, according to the Bangor Daily News.
“I would like to have my business here someday,” Annis said, adding that it wouldn’t happen without access to high-speed internet, the BDN reported.
A study last September by Tilson Technology estimated it would cost $7.9 million for every household and business in Rockport to have fiber, but said the economic benefits would exceed the costs, according to the BDN.
A number of opponents of the proposal cited the costs of the project, including resident Bill Freeman, who said that taxpayer’s money could be spent on other projects.
