Southern Maine Community College is moving forward with plans to locate a campus on the site of the Brunswick Naval Air Station, and college officials say the campus will serve at least 1,500 students by 2014.
College officials today were scheduled to present their plans for the $2.6 million campus to the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, the organization charged with developing a reuse plan for the base when it closes in 2011, according to The Times Record in Brunswick. The college intends to use the campus to train manufacturing workers, and will use an existing health clinic on the base to train nurses and medical technicians. The college also plans to collaborate with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University -- which in May said it planned to keep its campus open after the base closes -- to offer its students general education requirements.
SMCC first expressed interest in locating a campus at the base in 2007.
