SMHC to move overnight care from Sanford to Biddeford

Southern Maine Health Care, created in January 2014 with the merger of Goodall Hospital in Sanford and Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, announced Wednesday it will end overnight hospital care in Sanford and eliminate about 13 positions.

The Portland Press Herald  reported SMHC will keep its 24-hour emergency center in the former Goodall Hospital and add a walk-in care center. It also will open a new cancer care practice and have more specialists there.

The newspaper reported that SMHC plans to start sending its overnight inpatient-care patients to its Biddeford hospital on Oct. 23.

Ed McGeachey, SMHC’s president and CEO, told the newspaper many of the staff members who will lose their jobs because of the changes will be offered other positions over the next six weeks.
