State warns against lending scam

A fake lending company promising loans to consumers in debt has bilked more than a dozen people out of money.

Maine's Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection says people from all over the country have called to report sending money to Hoover Alliance Trust but have not received any promised loans, according to the Bar Harbor Times. The company claims it is based in South Portland and a licensed Maine lender, and promises loans if consumers first wire up to $2,000 in fees. Will Lund, superintendent of the bureau, said scammers usually target people already in default on other debt.

A list of licensed lenders is available at the Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection's website, www.credit.maine.gov.
