Study: Laptop program works

The state's laptop program has improved eighth graders' writing skills, according to a study released Tuesday by the University of Southern Maine.

The study from the Maine Education Policy Research Institute at USM says that 43.7% of eighth graders in Maine who used laptops met writing-proficiency standards on the Maine Educational Assessment Test in 2005, more than twice the percentage of those who didn't use laptops frequently, according to a press release.

The state's middle school laptop program, called the Maine Learning Technology Initiative, has supplied middle school students with Apple laptops since 2002. The study is the first to measure the program's impact on learning, according to the state Department of Education.
