Study: Twin River opponents' claims unfounded

A proposed coal gasification plant in Wiscasset would have the same or lesser environmental impact as a natural gas power plant, according to a study released yesterday by the company proposing the plant.

The study commissioned by Twin River Energy LLC says its proposed $1.5 billion coal gasification plant at the former Maine Yankee site would have carbon dioxide emissions equal to or below that of natural gas power plants. Potomac Hudson Engineering Inc. in Bethesda, Md., the study's author, analyzed possible emissions from each part of the production process to reach its conclusion.

Presented at a meeting yesterday at the Chewonki Foundation in Wiscasset, the study contradicts claims from the plant's opponents, who say the plant would be more harmful to the environment than natural gas plants.

Wiscasset residents will vote Nov. 6 on whether to change the town's building-height restrictions to allow Twin River to proceed with planning.
