Texas co. buys Brewer shoemaker

Justin Brands Inc. has purchased Highland Shoe Co. LLC in Brewer for an undisclosed price.

The Bangor Daily News reported the Texas-based subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. announced the acquisition of Highland's name and assets Thursday.

The paper reported that all of the company's 35 employees in Brewer will be retained and Highland President Andrew Sutton said the acquisition will allow the company to continue to grow.

While Sutton said no expansion is planned for the immediate future, he said that has been part of the long-range discussion with Justin.

A Justin Brands executive told the paper that Highland will continue sewing about 400 pairs of shoes a week for private labels like Yuketeen, Red Wing, Sperry Top-Sider Shoes and others.

Justin, based in Fort Worth, Texas, also has manufacturing operations in Cassville and Carthage, Mo., and El Paso, Texas.
