Tracing lobster on industry's radar

Maine lobstermen are considering ways to prove a lobster's chain of custody from the time of its catch to its arrival at market.

The topic, called traceability, was raised at last weekend's annual Canadian-United States Lobstermen's Town Meeting at the Saint John Trade and Convention Centre in New Brunswick. Pushing the issue is the Europe Union, which next year will require all imported seafood be traceable to its source. Such information is expected to help prevent illegal harvests of marine species and enable regulators and consumers to respond more effectively if tainted food appears on the market, reported the Bangor Daily News.

Traceability would likely require more paperwork on the part of lobstermen, but it could also be a way to promote Maine lobster as a sustainable, healthy food product without confirmation or certification from outside groups, said conference participants.
