The University of Maine is planning to cut 74 positions and reduce wages to address a projected $5.9 million budget shortfall in 2011.
At a workshop session in Orono yesterday, Janet Waldron, vice president for finance and administration, said most of those reductions will come in retirements, resignations or frozen positions, though eight will be layoffs, according to the Bangor Daily News. The cuts are unrelated to those proposed last week as part of the Academic Program Prioritization Working Group report, which called for a reduction of $12.3 million from the academic affairs budget for fiscal year 2012.
The budget projection for fiscal year 2011, which begins July 1, 2010, is $216 million, up from $213 million in the current year. Included in budget predictions is a 5.5% tuition increase, which still needs approval from the University of Maine System board of trustees. About half the budget shortfall, of $2.96 million, will come from wage and salary reductions, according to the paper.
