$310M supplemental budget passed

A $310 million supplemental budget passed the Legislature with little debate and is now headed to the governor's office.

The budget, which closes a gap in the state's $5.7 billion two-year budget, includes $23 million in cuts to the Department of Health and Human Services, $47 million in cuts to K-12 education and $16 million in cuts to revenue sharing for cities and towns, according to the Kennebec Journal. Another $8 million for higher education was cut. It also includes about $8 million to be put into the state's rainy day fund by June 30, with an additional $2.5 million the following year. The House voted 110-35 to approve the measure, while the Senate voted 31-2. Those against the bill, mostly Republicans, said the supplemental budget relied too heavily on federal stimulus money, according to the Bangor Daily News. The Legislature's appropriations committee unanimously supported the supplemental budget March 23.

Gov. John Baldacci had originally proposed $438 million in cuts, but additional federal money and an increase in state revenues over projections filled some of the gap. Baldacci is expected to sign the bill today.
