Unemployment rate steady at 7%

Maine’s unemployment rate held steady in December from the month prior, remaining at 7%, according to the Maine Department of Labor.

The preliminary, seasonally adjusted rate in December was unchanged from November and down from 7.5% one year ago. The number of unemployed totaled 48,700, down 3,800 from a year ago. There were 593,700 nonfarm payroll jobs in December, down 2,500 over the month after an upward revision to the November estimate.

The U.S. unemployment rate was 8.5%, down from 8.7% in November and 9.4% one year ago. The New England average was 7.2%; rates in other states in the region were: 5.1% in New Hampshire; 5.1% in Vermont; 6.8% in Massachusetts; 8.2% in Connecticut; and 10.8% in Rhode Island.
