Verso idling Bucksport machine

Verso Paper Corp. is shutting down one of its four local papermaking machines for the month of November, according to company officials.

Bill Cohen, spokesman for Verso, told the Bangor Daily News that the No. 2 machine in Bucksport would be shut down beginning today. He said that, at least for the time being, there are no plans to reduce production at Verso's Androscoggin Mill in Jay.

The company plans to reduce total production at its four mills by 50,000 tons of coated groundwood in the fourth quarter of 2008. This is in addition to a 43,000-ton reduction in coated groundwood that the company had pursued during the second half of this year. The shutdown is needed to restore balance between Verso's inventory and market demands, according to a company statement.
