Waterville-based truck body manufacturer gets into the electric vehicle market

Courtesy / EVTS The FireFly electric vehicle, like this one on the job at the Boston Marathon, will be outfitted for a wide variety of uses by Waterville-based DuraMag.

Waterville-based DuraMag, the truck body maker formerly known as F3 Manufacturing, will soon be outfitting electricity-powered utility vehicles.

DuraMag will engineer, manufacture and install upfits for ev Transportation Services’ FireFly all-electric vehicles, converting them for use as food and parcel delivery vans, dump trucks, flatbed trucks and more, according to a news release this week.

The FireFly is a zero-emission lightweight utility vehicle designed to help provide essential services, such as sanitation, parking management and food delivery, especially in urban areas. The vehicle is something of a departure for DuraMag, whose all-aluminum bodies and accessories typically equip larger, more traditional trucks.

“We are committed to the future of transportation and to growing our capabilities in response to market demands,” said Daryl Adams, president and CEO of the Shyft Group (Nasdaq: SHYF), which acquired and renamed F3 last fall.

“End markets are starting to prioritize and even insist on electric vehicles. We continue to focus on those trends and expand our offerings within EV manufacturing and assembly to help ensure we meet broad customer demand.”

David Solomont, chairman and CEO of Massachusetts-based evTS, said, “We needed the help of a body builder with application-specific experience, familiar enough with EV technologies and weight distribution requirements, that could also guarantee us fast speed to market alongside a high-quality, durable build. DuraMag has delivered that and more.”

DuraMag has a 140,000-square-foot production facility on Trafton Road, employing over 200 people. In January the company announced it was looking to hire another 50.

F3 Manufacturing launched in 2016. In 2019, before its acquisition, it had sales of $25 million and ranked as Maine’s third-fastest-growing private business on the prestigious Inc. 5000 list.
