Waterville manufacturer to hire 50 and expand to 7-day work week

To keep up with customer orders, Waterville truck body manufacturer DuraMag is looking to fill 50 open positions.

The company — formerly known as F3 Manufacturing — is holding a hiring event Tuesday from 3-6 p.m. at its production facility, 977 West River Road, Door No. 10.

It's looking to hire welders, technicians, sandblasters, painters and general laborers.

According to its hiring notice, DuraMag offers competitive pay rates and benefits including many types of insurance, a 401(k) and an employee stock purchase plan.

DuraMag, launched as F3 Manufacturing in 2016, was acquired last fall by Charlotte, Mich.-based Shyft Group (Nasdaq: SHYF), a specialty vehicle manufacturer. It was rebranded after the acquisition.

The company’s operations include aluminum manufacturing, finishing, assembly and installation of DuraMag truck and van bodies, as well as Magnum-branded truck cab protection racks.

DuraMag currently employs about 210 people, Lisa Madore, the company’s human resources manager, told Mainebiz.

The hires signal a move to a seven-day, two-shift work week in order to keep up with orders, she said.

Madore attributed growing demand in part to the greater exposure provided nationally through Shyft.

“We’re part of their specialty lines,” she said. “You probably see a lot of our DuraMag bodies on a lot of the trucks out there and don’t realize it.”

Marketing for the hiring event began about a week ago and included connecting with area chambers of commerce, Kennebec Valley Community College and career centers, as well as radio ads and social media notices.

The in-person hiring event will involve a vehicle drive-through, when applicants can fill out applications. Welding tests and shop visits will be available for pertinent applicants.

Depending on how the event goes, Madore said she might also set up a regular open interview process for people to come in and fill out applications.

The campaign has generated response.

“I’ve had a lot of people telling me they’ve been hearing the ads,” she said. “I’ve had probably 20 phone calls in the last week asking about it.”

The company also offers informal on-the-job training for entry-level positions. Madore has reached out to the Maine Career Center’s apprenticeship program and to the local community college to look at apprenticeship options.

The goal is to make the 50 hires within the next few weeks. Further hiring is expected at some point after that, she added.
