Wilbur's Chocolate stays in the family with new owner

Two Maine chocolatiers and founders of the Freeport-based Wilbur's Of Maine Chocolate Confections have decided to hang up their aprons and call it a day, as Tom Wilbur and Catherine Carty-Wilbur announced they have passed ownership of their business to their son.

Andy Wilbur, a former teacher who joined the family business in 2008, is the new owner of the 33-year-old family business.

“I plan to continue our recent efforts toward using locally sourced ingredients, improving recipes, introducing exciting new products and creating Wilbur’s of Maine as a destination,” Andy Wilbur told The Forecaster.

Wilbur’s has been a mainstay of the Freeport business community since it was started in 1983 as a retail establishment on Bow Street. As Tom and Catherine — the self-proclaimed king and queen of Wilbur’s — grew their confection-filled roster, the company moved throughout the years before settling on a Lower Main Street “factory store” location in 2008.

In addition to its Freeport roots, Wilbur’s also has a retail location in downtown Brunswick.
