Winslow residents to vote on dam removal

Winslow residents in early June will decide whether to take a local dam owned by FPL Energy by eminent domain.

The Winslow Town Council on Monday agreed by a 3-2 vote to hear public opinion on whether the town should take ownership of the Sebasticook River dam to keep it from being removed, according to the Central Maine Morning Sentinel. Property owners are concerned that removing the dam would cause safety issues and harm wildlife. Juno Beach, Fla.-based FPL Energy plans to remove the 100-year-old dam in July because at times the energy it produces doesn't cover its operating costs, Winslow Town Manager Michael Heavener told Mainebiz this morning.

While legal advisors have said the town shouldn't take the dam by eminent domain, the council is letting residents vote June 10 on a non-binding agreement to take the dam, at the request of a local group called Save Our Sebasticook, Heavener said.
