Hydro plant to reopen on Penobscot River

An Orono hydroelectric plant will operate again for the first time since 1996 as part of an agreement to allow fish to traverse the Penobscot River.

PPL Corp., the facility owner, is rebuilding and reconditioning turbines and generators to produce electricity, and the contractor is set to begin work on "penstocks" to bring water from a dam in Orono to the powerhouse, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The hydroelectric plant is expected to be online by Jan. 1, and will add 20,000 megawatt-hours of electricity to area power supplies.
