Woolwich co. wins $14.3M bridge contract

The Woolwich-based contractor Reed & Reed Inc. has won a $14.3 million contract to build a new bridge between Richmond and Dresden.

The Kennebec Journal reported the company beat four other companies for the contract, including Freeport-based CPM Constructors, which was the next-closest bidder at $17.6 million.

Reed & Reed's bid came in $7.1 million below the Department of Transportation's $21.4 million cost estimate to rebuild the bridge, which DOT spokesman Ted Talbot told the paper has been a trend in recent years.

The new 1,300-foot bridge will replace a swing bridge built in 1931. The project is expected to be completed by July 2015 and is funded, in part, by a $10.8 million grant.
