Yacht maker nets Coast Guard work

A Down East yacht company has been tapped by the U.S. Coast Guard to build training vessels, work that would support 20 jobs.

Bass Harbor-based Morris Yachts has been awarded a contract to build four 44-foot sailing vessels for the Coast Guard's Academy to use in its Leadership 44 sail training program, according to the Bangor Daily News. The company plans to start construction on the $800,000 boats by the end of the year, company President Cuyler Morris told the paper. As a result, Morris Yachts will be able to recall as many as 20 employees who were temporarily laid off this summer due to the economic slowdown. Rehired workers would include mechanics, electricians, carpenters and composite craftspeople, Morris told the paper.

The company currently employs 75 people.
