Poll results

Gov. Janet Mills recently has toughened Maine's requirements for the use of protective face masks at many businesses across the state, including restaurants, bars, hotels and retailers in seven counties.

In June, a poll by the Southern Maine Midcoast Chamber found that while half of Maine consumers won't patronize a business because of inadequate social distancing, 21% of those surveyed balked at being required to wear a mask in a business establishment. Instead, they said they'd leave.

A coalition of Maine business groups has begun asking consumers to "be kind" by respecting such public health rules.

Just like every other aspect of Gov. Mills' handling of the pandemic, she punts it...and leaves it to small businesses to shoulder the financial burden, business loss, and now responsibility for policing the mess.

The science is clear that face masks protect each other and lessen the spread of the virus. Why wouldn’t everyone want to be kind and thoughtful about the health of others? We need to support businesses that post SORRY-NO MASK, NO SERVICE signs and who then respectfully enforce their decision. The Portland Regional Chamber is polling its members and their results will soon be public.
