With Gov. Janet Mills’ recent approval of regulations on the legalized recreational market for marijuana, over a dozen Maine cities and towns have chosen to permit local businesses that sell or produce pot. The number is expected to grow, as other communities seem ready to “opt in.” And the city of Auburn is encouraging existing medical marijuana businesses to apply now for a recreational-market license.

Still, not every community is joining the trend.

Although Maine voters legalized recreational pot through a 2016 citizen referendum, some municipalities have enacted moratoriums on marijuana merchants. Other towns are adopting a wait-and-see approach. With recreational marijuana sales beginning perhaps early next year, there are, still, divided opinions about where the sellers set up shop.
