With Labor Day now past, it's a good time to look back at the summer of 2023.

Maine hotels, restaurants and other hospitality enterprises traditionally count on summer as their peak season for revenue. The mid-year warmth can also heat up business in other fields, such as retail, entertainment and transportation.

This summer, however, was unlike many others.

Inflation cooled, but some prices were scorching. Home prices were hot, hotter, hottest. The weather itself was unpredictable. In June, southern Maine saw 22 days with measurable precipitation — twice the average. Bangor recorded only seven days this summer when temperatures hit at least 80; typically there are 16.

Was the summer a commercial success? It's hard to say.

Overall, how do you think Maine businesses fared during this summer season?
Much better than I expected (6%, 8 VOTES)
Better than I expected (26%, 36 VOTES)
About as I expected (41%, 58 VOTES)
Worse than I expected (23%, 33 VOTES)
