After much anticipation and a 15-month rulemaking process, legalized sports gambling began in Maine on Nov. 3.
Mobile and online wagering, controlled by the state's indigenous tribes, is expected to account for 85% of the betting market. The Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, Mi’kmaq Nation and Penobscot Nation have contracted with Caesars Entertainment to run a sports betting platform in Maine, and the Passamaquoddy Tribe is working with DraftKings Inc. On Friday, the platforms were accepting wagers.
Besides generating income for the tribes, the betting is expected to create between $3.8 million and $6.9 million in annual tax revenue for the state.
Some Mainers have long opposed sports betting in Maine, however, because of concerns about gambling addiction and other issues. Indeed, Gov. Janet Mills opposed legalization until signing the 2022 bill that gave the tribes a near-monopoly on the sportsbook.

Giving this to the Tribes was a huge mistake. The General Fund could have used this cash to increase revenue without yet another Tax Increase

Great to see sports wagering legalized in Maine to join 30 other states in monetizing related upside to both tribes and state. Draftkings and Caesars will help promote responsible gaming with all parties winning.
