Employee participation and benefits

What is one way employee ownership has strengthened your company’s performance?

Cianbro was the first ESOP established in Maine. By the early 1960s, we had a policy of sharing profits with our team members in the form of a Christmas bonus. By the mid-1970s, our founders felt something more formal was needed to allow our team members to have ownership of the company. At the time, ESOPs were uncommon in our industry. We went ahead with the plan in 1979. By 2004, Cianbro was 100% employee owned.

Our legacy of employee ownership has strengthened our company’s performance and influenced our ability to attract and retain talent. Every day our team members make choices that are informed by their status as an owner with stock in this company. This ownership mindset fosters a culture of accountability, pride, and long-term commitment, qualities that are highly attractive to prospective team members and deeply valued by those who work here. Great responsibility and immense pride come with being an employee owner at Cianbro.

What is one professional development opportunity your team members value most?

Cianbro is dedicated to lifelong learning, evidenced by our own Cianbro Institute, which works diligently to provide the best in-house resources while building upon partnerships with external organizations and education centers to offer the best learning opportunities. We help our team members develop their expertise and learn new things so they can find many ways to succeed here. By investing in our team, we have developed thousands of highly qualified construction professionals. If you believe in the potential of individuals — and are willing to make the investment in those who possess the right attitude, are adaptable and have the aptitude and desire to learn — their potential is endless.

Company culture

How does your company celebrate or recognize team members contributions?

Recognizing and celebrating our team members is a core part of our culture. As an employee-owned company, we understand the value of acknowledging the hard work and dedication of our team members.

One of our key recognition programs is the Health and Safety Coin program, which highlights individuals who go above and beyond to promote safety on the job. These coins are awarded by leadership, creating a culture where safety excellence is visible and appreciated across all levels of the organization.

We also honor long-term commitment through our 25-year watch ceremonies, celebrating team members who have reached a significant milestone in their careers. These events reflect the loyalty, expertise, and legacy that long-standing team members bring to our company.

Community and social impact

Does being an ESOP influence your community involvement? How does your company give back to the community?

Our team members are actively encouraged to participate in civic and charitable initiatives that strengthen the communities where we live and work.

One of our newest partnerships is with the Roc Solid Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to building hope for children battling cancer. Roc Solid provides families with “Ready Bags” at diagnosis and constructs backyard playsets to give kids a safe space to play and just be kids during treatment. This meaningful collaboration aligns perfectly with our values and our team members feel privileged to use their skills in this way.

In addition, our community efforts include food, clothing, and toy drives, blood donations, seasonal giving programs, educational outreach with high school students, and honoring veterans. These initiatives reflect our commitment to building stronger communities.
