As one of nine independent Outward Bound schools in the U.S., Hurricane Island Outward Bound School (HIOBS) represents one of the top educational brands focusing on character development, leadership, and service.
HIOBS expeditions are transformative life experiences that inspire self-discovery, confidence, connection, teamwork, and resilience. With a supportive crew and the outdoors as their teacher, students learn to dig deep, find greater compassion for each other and the world around them, and push beyond what they thought possible. Through our Outward Bound Professional programs, we also partner with executives and organizations committed to building collaborative, compassionate cultures.
At HIOBS, we believe everyone deserves a transformative wilderness experience, regardless of income, identity, or zip code. Our 2025 philanthropic goals focus on access, excellence, and impact:
• Expand access to life-changing expeditions for youth and educators through increased scholarship funding and outreach to underserved communities.
• Support veterans and their families through courses that provide perspective, connection, and a renewed sense of purpose.
• Deepen program impact through curriculum refinement and expanded alumni engagement.
• Grow partnerships with schools, nonprofits, and mission-aligned businesses to reach more participants.
• Foster long-term sustainability through diversified funding and donor engagement strategies to reduce financial barriers to an Outward Bound education.
These goals position HIOBS to meet rising demand while staying true to our mission as a leader in wilderness education.
HIOBS hosts mission-driven events throughout the year that bring together alumni, supporters, and new friends. Our signature Annual General Meeting features a classic Maine lobster bake, stories from the field, and a celebration of the impact of our programs. We also hold smaller donor and alumni gatherings in Maine and across the country to strengthen our community and inspire connection. In 2026, we’re excited to bring Mountainfilm on Tour back to Portland and share this powerful film and fundraising event with our supporters and the southern Maine community.
Businesses and individuals can get involved through sponsorships, in-kind donations, or employee engagement. These opportunities provide meaningful connections, strong brand alignment, and the ability to provide life-changing programs for Maine youth and veterans through scholarships.
Every gift to HIOBS helps launch someone into challenge, discovery, and growth.
• Individual Donors fuel scholarships, gear, and the hands-on learning that defines our courses.
• Corporate Partners amplify impact through program sponsorships, matching gifts, and in-kind support.
• Monthly Donors can join our Blue Peter Society and provide the steady support that helps build lasting change.
• Our Compass Collective offers the chance for a growing network of donors to make bold annual investments in youth and veteran leadership.
• Planned Giving supporters shape the future by including HIOBS in their estate plans.
Together, we break down barriers to access and deliver life-changing expeditions that build courage, confidence, and community – for life.
While our remote, expedition-based model doesn’t lend itself to traditional volunteer roles, we deeply value the time, skills, and energy our community brings. Businesses and individuals can support HIOBS by serving on planning committees, hosting friend-raisers, or lending expertise in areas like marketing, logistics, or fundraising.
We welcome volunteers who want to help tell our story, expand our reach, and support our mission behind the scenes. Have an idea? Let’s talk.
