Islands awarded $1.76M for electric upgrades

Two Maine island communities are receiving a total of $1.76 million from the federal government to improve their electricity systems.

Swan's Island Electric Cooperative Inc. and Fox Islands Electric Cooperative Inc. of North Haven and Vinalhaven have been awarded loans through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service, according to a press release from the USDA. Swan's Island will use the $813,000 loan to build three miles of new distribution line, improve four miles of existing line and make other improvements. Fox Islands will use $950,000 to build four miles of new line, improve eight miles of existing line and make other improvements. The loans will increase the reliability of electrical service, extend service to new users and keep power affordable, according to the release.

The USDA is providing a total of $2.1 billion in loans for distribution system and smart grid technology improvements in 27 states.
