Island Institute, a Rockland nonprofit, has named Charles French as its chief community development officer.
He will oversee strategic priorities in climate, marine economy and community capacity.
“The strong social fabric found in Maine’s rural coastal communities draws me to this work, and I’m excited to support the great work happening to strengthen local economies, protect what makes these places unique and create new opportunities for Maine’s coast,” French said.
He brings over 30 years of experience in community and economic development.
Before joining the Island Institute, French led the University of New Hampshire cooperative extension’s community and economic development division, where he oversaw strategic planning, program implementation, and impact evaluation for teams focused on strengthening local economies, supporting entrepreneurship and enhancing downtown vibrancy. He also served as a faculty member at UNH.
Earlier in his career, French volunteered with the Peace Corps in rural Panama, where he worked with farmers to implement sustainable agriculture practices. He later served as an economic development educator with the University of Illinois Extension.
“Charlie brings an ideal combination of deep technical expertise, practical experience and respect for people and place,” said Island Institute President Kimberly Hamilton. “As Maine’s coastal communities face increasing climate and economic challenges, his leadership will help ensure our work remains grounded in community priorities while advancing innovative, forward-looking solutions.”
French holds a bachelor's degree in geography from Dartmouth College, a master's in regional planning and geography from Western Illinois University and a Ph.D. in natural resources policy from the University of New Hampshire.
The Island Institute was founded in 1983 and works with 120 island and coastal communities to strengthen economies, enhance education and share information and resources. It has an annual operating budget of $8 million.
