Downeaster to extend coastal line Nov. 1

Amtrak's Downeaster train service will begin service to Freeport and Brunswick on Nov. 1, extending the rail line that now runs between Boston and Portland.

The Forecaster reports that the daily schedule will include two round trips between Brunswick and Boston each day, starting at 6:30 a.m., and an additional trip between Brunswick and Portland.

The train currently makes five daily round trips from Boston's North Station to Portland.

Patricia Quinn, executive director of the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, announced in July that the train service served nearly 530,000 passengers last year, making it the fastest-growing line for Amtrak in the nation.

Tickets for the service will be available on Oct. 1.
