Significant professional accomplishment: My most significant professional accomplishment thus far has been reopening the restaurant and pub after its closure during the pandemic, as well as our rebranding and extensive marketing work to showcase the inn to a wider audience. In our first year, we were hit with many unexpected repairs [but] we’re all caught up — knock on wood — and intend to keep up on everything to keep this historic property standing for years.
Passion project: Matt [Co-owner Matt Powell] and I both said we wanted a lifetime project. To put it simply, the inn itself is my passion project. From physical work on the building to hosting parties for the town in the off-season, there is always something to do. We’ve worked this first year to reposition the Pentagöet as the heart of the town and I think locals would agree with us!
Audacious goal: A few of our goals for this year are to create a secret library in the main inn and create a beautiful Victorian courtyard to connect both buildings on the property. We hope to include a new fire pit area with more seating so guests can enjoy even more outdoor space. We won’t get to it this year, but we also plan to revamp some of the overgrown areas on-site for a croquet lawn and gazebo area.
Our 10-year goal is to completely renovate the attic into an old-school and structurally sound recreation and game room. Picture the top room in the movie “Knives Out,” but even chic-er and more Victorian. Absolutely fabulous. We create magic for our guests through very extensive processes.
Favorite quote: “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could all be a little more gentle with each other and a little more loving, have a little more empathy, and maybe we’d like each other a little bit more.” — Judy Garland
Influential book: I enjoy a good murder mystery and detective novel by one of my favorite authors, Agatha Christie. I find her works to be descriptive, immersive and mentally engaging when I need to clear my head after a busy day.
Favorite movies or TV shows: “Downton Abbey” and “The Gilded Age”
How do you recharge: By imagining and executing extensive glamorous projects to complete in and around the inn. This includes using my skills, such as painting, sewing, woodworking, etc., to create beautiful and warm spaces for guests, friends, family, Matt Powell [another 40 Under 40 honoree], and our dog Mister to enjoy. It’s a funny thing what other people deem as work is very much my gateway to relaxation and enjoyment.
