Airbnb locations to start collecting lodging tax in Maine

Airbnb will start collecting lodging tax in Maine.

The San Francisco-based website that matches homeowners with short-term renters said it now has a voluntary collection agreement with the state of Maine.

It will automatically collect and remit the state’s lodging tax on rentals. Maine’s lodging tax is 9%, but Gov. Paul LePage’s proposed 2017 supplemental and 2018-2019 biennial budgets call for raising it to 10%.

The agreement will go into effect on April 1.

The agreement comes at a time when Maine’s Airbnb travel activity is surging. In 2016, Maine’s 3,700 active hosts brought in $26 million by welcoming approximately 174,000 visitors, double that of a year earlier. The typical host in Maine generated $5,900 in income last year.
