A community lodge recently opened at Camp Tracy, a summer camp at 302 McGrath Pond Road in the Kennebec County town of Oakland.

The Alfond Lodge at McGrath Pond is new construction designed to provide a modern, spacious dining center for meals, gatherings and special events while showcasing the natural beauty of the camp’s surroundings.

Features include climate-controlled overnight accommodations, an outdoor terrace, an up-to-date audio/visual, lighting and catering systems, and customizable seating.

The contracting team included Lajoie Brothers in Augusta and Rick Labbe Construction in Smithfield. Donors included the Harold Alfond Foundation.

The opening took place on Oct. 7 at the lodge, which is nestled in the heart of Camp Tracy’s 32-acre campus in Oakland.

Speakers included Sue Hawkes, a longtime Alfond Youth and Community Center supporter; Greg Powell, president and CEO of the Harold Alfond Foundation; Ken Walsh, CEO of the Alfond Youth & Community Center; and Bruce White, chair of the Founders Club Committee.

The camp is among the programs run by the Alfond Youth and Community Center, a nonprofit in Waterville with an 85,000-square-foot facility serving nearly 9,000 members from throughout the 50 communities of Greater Waterville.

Alfond Youth and Community Center’s other programs include a merged Boys and Girls Clubs and YMCA; child care and afterschool programs, wellness, fitness, athletics, aquatics and summer camps.

Camp Tracy, on Oakland’s McGrath Pond, is home to sports camps and an adventure and an excursion camp.

The opening event also hosted the center’s annual founders club reunion.

“This celebration is more than the opening of a building,” said Ken Walsh, the center’s CEO. “It is a gathering of people who believe in investing in our young people, strengthening families, and building a brighter future for central Maine.”

The lodge will serve as a cornerstone for Camp Tracy programs, community gatherings and special events.
