The world’s largest online retailer has opened a new delivery facility in the Aroostook County city of Caribou — its first physical site in Maine.

Amazon WME5, the 12,040-square-foot facility at 33 Aldrich Drive, is designed to speed delivery in the region.

It's not a warehouse, Amazon’s Mike Murphy told Mainebiz. Packages will be shipped to the station from Amazon fulfillment and sorting centers, loaded into vehicles and delivered to customers' doorsteps.

Initially service will be provided primarily in the Caribou region, but service is projected to expand to the Fort Fairfield area.

The company has moved into an existing building that was previously used for manufacturing stainless steel food equipment manufacturing.

Until now, Amazon's physical presence in Maine had been limited to locker delivery in the Whole Foods Market in Portland.

Rural expansion drive

The new delivery station is part of Amazon's recently announced $4 billion investment to expand rural delivery in small towns across the United States. It follows the opening of three operations centers in Massachusetts — Charlton, Andover and Worcester — and a fulfillment center in Johnston, R.I.

Small staff

Murphy said the new facility is currently operating with a small staff.

As a new employer in the region, Amazon plans to participate in a job fair on Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Caribou Wellness and Recreation Center at 55 Bennett Drive. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
