Another accolade: 3 Maine towns named among 20 friendliest in US for travelers

Tourists and tourism businesses, take note — Maine has laid claim to another potential draw for visitors.

The state is home to three of the country’s 20 friendliest towns and cities, based on public feedback, travel website Expedia reported last week in a news release. Maine’s friendliest towns are Kennebunkport, No. 7 in the U.S.; Ogunquit, No. 9; and Bar Harbor, No. 16.

Only Hawaii had more communities in the top 20, with four. Colorado placed two places on the list, and was the only other state with more than one.

Expedia said it compiled the rankings according to the percentage of positive traveler reviews mentioning words like "friendly," "friendliest" and "amiable" from January 2019 to December 2020. The website, one of the world’s most popular for travel, receives millions of visitors each month.

Besides the friendly Maine towns, the only New England municipality to break the top 20 was Provincetown, Mass., ranking No. 10. Nationwide, the No. 1 friendliest community was Whitefish, Mont.

“In addition to promising the friendliest experience, these outdoorsy, beachy and small-town destinations are right in line with Expedia's spring and summer 2021 travel trends as travelers look for socially distanced options and domestic beach escapes,” the news release said.

But the rankings weren't confined to small towns. The New York City borough of Manhattan was No. 14 on the list.

Maine’s high scores come a month after another travel website, Tripadvisor, ranked one of the state's friendliest towns also among the best for its beachfront. Ogunquit’s was No. 7 in the U.S., and was the only spot in the Northeast to make the top 10. Those other honorees comprised five beaches in Hawaii, two in Florida, and one each in California and Oregon.

Of course they are friendly, they love the tourists. That's the only reason they are friendly. Move to Maine as I did 11 years ago and see how much they dislike you because you are from away. Seriously.
