Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Homes has listed its longstanding location at 172 State St. in Portland for $2.09 million, as it prepares to open a new facility at 300 Allen Ave. in the city’s North Deering neighborhood.
“This building has been both our personal and professional home, and the setting of thousands of important moments for area families,” said Adam Walker, Conroy-Tully Walker’s owner.
The funeral home will continue to operate at the State Street location until it is sold, according to a news release.
The property is listed with Tom Moulton and Katie Breggia at the Dunham Group.
Conroy-Tully Funeral Homes was founded in 1959 at 15 Deering St.
In 1960, the firm purchased the R.J. Duddy and Sons Funeral Home at 172 State St. and moved the firm there. In 1990, it opened a branch at 1024 Broadway in South Portland. Walker and his wife Caitlin bought the business in 2014.
The State Street property is an 8,390-square-foot, three-story building on 0.38 acre, with a detached four-bay carriage house and a connected 0.22-acre parking lot with a two-bay garage at 105 Winter St.
The 300 Allen Ave. location, expected to open in October, is designed as a funeral, cremation and memorial service center designed to provide a range of services under one roof.
“Often, families call a funeral home to handle the cremation or burial of a loved one, only to then seek out separate venues like restaurants, country clubs or hotels for receptions or celebrations of life. Our new facility is built to change that,” said Walker.
The $3.6 million project is a ground-up construction on nearly two acres.
The construction team includes Benchmark Construction, Harriman Architecture and Design and Gorrill-Palmer Consulting Engineers. The project is being financed by Norway Savings Bank.
The State Street building itself is just over 8,000 square feet, but the public areas are only 2,500 square feet.
The 9,899 square-foot Allen Avenue building will include flexible spaces for traditional funerals, contemporary celebrations and intimate farewells and a dedicated reception area with outdoor patio.
There will be two private arrangement offices, a state-of-the-art area for preparation of remains and safety of embalmers and staff, off-street parking, additional courtesy spaces and staff areas. Services will include on-site catering partnerships.
The company bought the Allen Avenue property in 2022, after five to 10 years of seeking in Portland that was large enough.
Pre-arranged plans made at the State Street location will be honored either at the Allen Avenue or the South Portland location, based on the client’s wishes.
